
Elite runners fight for every second. One second per kilometer? That’s the difference between tens of thousands in prize money and going home with nothing.
So they look for any legal edge they can find.
Yeah, the same stuff in your kitchen. And the stuff you use for cookies and cleaning your sink.
Here’s how it works—think of your muscles and blood like a campfire.
When you run hard, they make ‘smoke’. That’s lactate. That burning in your legs during a hard 5k? That’s the smoke.
Baking soda acts like a small fan blowing the smoke away. It clears the lactate so you can push harder for longer.
Sounds perfect, right?
Not so fast. Like all things in life, there is always a trade off.
Three big problems:
First, it can destroy your stomach. We’re talking race/training run ending bathroom emergencies.
Second, the pro version that has the least amount of reported stomach issues, made by Maurten is expensive ($17.50 per serving/run) and doesn’t ship to where I live (Australia) and some other parts of the world.
Third, you need perfect timing. Get it that wrong and it doesn’t do much.
So I wondered—can I figure this out? Can I make my own? And is it even worth it?
The Science Behind Baking Soda Buffering In Running
Your blood has a pH level. Think battery acid versus dish soap. One eats through metal, the other neutralizes grease.
When you run hard—gasping, legs burning, heart maxed out—you make lactate aka lactic acid. Lots of it. That lactate makes you slow down.
Baking soda soaks up that lactate like a sponge.
Quick note: Some people say “lactic acid,” some say “lactate.” Scientists prefer lactate now. But honestly? Same thing. Don’t stress it.

Here’s the key point: This baking soda buffering thing only works for efforts under 60 minutes. And the most effective is actually shorter than that (see below)
Why?
But half and full marathons? You’re running at a steady pace. so not much lactate is there to clear. So baking soda does basically nothing.

Study #1: International Society of Sports Nutrition Position Stand

The International Society of Sports Nutrition checked hundreds of studies. Their finding? Baking soda works for high-intensity efforts lasting 30 seconds to 12 minutes. That’s it.
Short, hard efforts like a mile or 5k? You’re building up lactate fast. Baking soda helps a lot.

Another big review found some gains in events lasting 45 seconds to 8 minutes.
But longer runs?
Study #3: 39-Minute Running Study

One study tested runners for 39 minutes. Result with baking soda: 39.6 minutes. With fake pills: 39.3 minutes. No difference.
Bottom line: This works for 5k runners. Not marathoners.

Experiment 1: This Actually Works
First test: 8 x 1k repeats at 10k pace. The workout that is comfortably hard
I took 19 grams—about 2.5 teaspoons—90 minutes before the start of my run (knowing I would be in the middle of the session in 2 hours).
That’s the standard low end starter dose from research: 0.25 grams per kilogram of body weight.
Mixed it with water. Chugged it. Waited.
90 minutes later? I felt strong. Really strong.
Those final reps that usually feel like death and heart rate starts creeping up? I crushed them with a nice and steady hr – So I know it wasn’t just in my head.
Power up 2-3%. Effort felt easier. The burn came later than normal.
I thought: This is it. This is the edge that actually works.
But here’s 3 things
1- I spent hours trying to get the timing right. The dose. The mix. I didn’t just guess.
2- The taste was horrendous!! Super salty and not at all lol easy to drink. With that much baking soda you needed a lot of water, but the more water the more I had to drown in that terrible taste.
3- I tried to go higher in dose for the next run trial

Experiment 2: My Gut Rebels
Test two: tempo threshold run. Same timing.
Different dose: I went up to the pro level of .3grams per kilogram of body weight which was 22.5 grams total (3 teaspoons)
Everything went wrong before I got out of the door
15 minutes after taking it – I got the bubble guts and my stomach started making noises. Bad noises. Like a shaken soda can about to explode.
Burps happen for 15 minutes and then…. Toilet… not once, not twice but four times in the span of an hour.
It calmed down and I went out for a run, but yeah the whole run I was freaking out and made sure I was close to a bathroom.
I didn’t feel great, stomach was way off and I came home and then experienced bathroom issues for the next 2-3 hours.
The problem? Baking soda is super alkaline. Your stomach is acidic. When they meet, your gut freaks out.
And it seemed like .3 grams per kg of body weight was too much. .25 was the magic bullet.
So more is not more in this situation.
Workout: ruined.
And here’s what nobody tells you: Research shows 50% of people get gut issues from this stuff. Nausea. Cramps. Diarrhea. The works.
I’m not special.
That’s when I thought: How do pros avoid this? What’s their secret?
If I can’t access Maurten’s actual product which says way less gut issues… it’s time to go full send experimental nerd.
Experiment 3: Cracking The Code
Maurten’s formula costs $70 USD (17.50 per serving) and you can’t even buy it in some parts of the world (Australia where I live is one of them)
But what if I could make my own?
So I started digging. Reading patents. Using AI, Google, etc. checking ingredients to reverse engineer this thing.
Maurten’s trick? Smart chemistry.
They use:
- Baking soda (obviously)
- Sodium alginate (makes a gel that protects your stomach)
- Xantham gum and/or pectin
- I added in Maltodextrin
- And some sweet raspberry flavouring from my carb mix drink powder
- Perfect ratios
Not magic. Just good food science.
I spent the next few days tweaking my own version in my kitchen. Testing. Adjusting.
And I got it close.

My version: $2 per serving – Maurten’s: $17.50
Yeah. Almost 9 times cheaper.
It actually tasted way better and was easy to take down. It was chunky but putting it in the fridge the night before helped a lot (cold drinks usually taste better- think BEER)
Test three: 30 minutes at my true threshold with my DIY formula.
Gut? Really good – are issues. Performance? Still got that 2-3% boost. Low HR, high power, low perceived effort.
Maybe I figured it out.
Time for the real test… a race.
Experiment 4: The Truth
Test four: actual 3k race. 10 minutes of pure suffering. Perfect for testing baking soda.
I used my DIY formula. Timing was perfect. Gut felt normal – zero issues.
The race? I performed well. Pushed harder than normal and was 10 seconds off my random time of 9:59 for the 3k (2 mile) race). I’ve never raced it before, so I didn’t know what I was capable of, but my training said I should be able to t hit 10 minutes.
I ended up touching my highest heart rate ever (at age 42!) of 193 without feeling like I was dying.
The physical side worked.
But…
The whole race I was stressed about my gut. Wondering if this lap would be the one where I’d have to bail.
Second-guessing everything. Fueling. Hydration. Timing.
And the prep. Ugh… so annoying. Just more stress to an already stressful day.
For what? Maybe 1-3% gain?
In training? Sure, experiment.
But in a race where you’ve trained for months and one issue can throw all of that work away?
Honest Truth After All 4 Tests
After four tests, here’s my take.
Try it if you’re:
- Running a 5k or are on the faster side of 10k like 40 minutes or faster (not a race with the words marathon in it)
- Chasing a lifetime best
- Willing to practice multiple times and have hours available to you to tweak and play kitchen lab rat
- Fine with risking gut issues on race day
For me? Not worth it.
Not worth the stress. Not worth the gut gamble. Not worth the hassle.
The real gains come from:
- Consistent training month after month
- Good sleep every night and proper recovery day in and day out
- Smart pacing in workouts
- Fuel you trust because you’ve tested it
Sometimes the best experiment is knowing when to stop.
