Running is very individual, so experiment with everything I say and don’t take anything as hard truth for you, even if science backed.
Every fitness app on your phone, every smartwatch notification, every running influencer you follow is telling you the same thing. Get that VO2 max number up. That’s the number that matters. That’s the number you need to obsess over.
Except it’s not.
I realized this last year when my Garmin said my VO2 max was 56. Solid number, right? Most people would be happy with that. But then I ran a 5K in 17:47, plugged it into a Cooper test calculator, and got a VO2 max estimate of 71. Seventy-one. The same body. Two totally different numbers.
So yeah… what if we’re chasing the wrong thing?

VO2 Max Is Just Engine Size
Quick reality check. VO2 max is basically how much oxygen your body can use during hard effort. It’s your capacity. Your ceiling.
That’s it.
It doesn’t tell you how well you use it. It doesn’t tell you if you can hold pace, handle fatigue, or move efficiently. It’s just potential.
You can have a big engine and still go nowhere fast.
I’ve seen runners with average VO2 max numbers run circles around people who look “gifted” on paper. Why? Because they trained. They built durability. They learned how to actually use what they have.
I’ve been running for 30 years. I’ve got a certification. And the thing that’s actually bumped my VO2 max over the years? Low heart rate training. Easy runs. Building aerobic capacity, not chasing peaks. One number doesn’t capture that. One number doesn’t capture you.
“A high VO2 max won’t save you from poor training.”
What the Longevity Research Actually Measured
All the studies people cite to justify chasing this metric don’t actually measure VO2 max in a lab. They measure performance.
Steve Magness points this out.
The research that predicts how long we live, how healthy we stay, doesn’t use lab scores. It uses the speed you hit at the end of a treadmill test. It uses your 5K time. It uses what you actually do in the real world.
A 2024 meta-analysis of 21 million people across 199 studies showed this clearly. High fitness versus low fitness: a 53 percent reduction in all-cause mortality. Not a number. Performance.
And here’s why this matters when you’re 44 like I am, thinking about whether you’ll still be able to play with your grandkids when you’re 70. There’s a frailty threshold. A VO2 max of 15 or below is basically the line where you can’t take care of yourself anymore. You can’t bend down. You can’t stand up from the toilet. You can’t live independently. Most people never think about that threshold until it’s too late.
So my goal isn’t to hit some magic number on my watch. My goal is to stay above that threshold for the next 20 years, 30 if I’m lucky. To keep the ability to move. To have a life worth living, not just a life.
“The best runners aren’t obsessed with metrics. They’re obsessed with consistency.”

How I Actually Know It’s Working
I don’t have a lab. Neither do you probably. But you don’t need one. Run a mile time trial. Run a 5K as hard as you can and test yourself every few months. That number will tell you more than your watch ever will.
Or try the Maffetone test. Run about 3 miles at your high Zone 2 heart rate and see how much ground you cover. It’s not super precise for VO2 max, but it’s excellent for actually tracking aerobic fitness and longevity, and you can do it when you’re 60 without destroying your body.
The point isn’t the number on the screen. It’s whether you’re getting faster, staying healthy, and building a body that works for your life, not against it.
